Pizza Hut for iPhone earns $1 million from on-the-go orders in just three months
Pizza Hut’s free iPhone app has generated nearly $1 million in sales in just three months thanks to the built-in ordering functionality and the 20 percent saving on every order. It lets you drag toppings on your pizza and spread a sauce across the WingStreet wings by shaking your device.

Billed as the “killer app for your appetite,” Pizza Hut’s free iPhone app (iTunes link) has been only three months on the market but it has already amassed nearly one million downloads and raked in nearly $1 million in sales. According to Pizza Hut’s senior director of digital marketing Bernard Acoca, the success of the free app has taken aback the Texas, Dallas-based restaurant chain. The executive said the following to Mobile Marketer:
We are extremely excited here about the explosive growth we’ve seen with our iPhone app since its launch 3 months ago – $1 million in sales is pretty substantial for an iPhone app. Overall we’re tremendously excited with the momentum the app has and the attention it’s received – it is featured in Apple’s recent television commercial campaign, which is any app developer’s dream scenario.
Encouraged by such a great start, the company will port the app to Android devices, Palm’s Pre, and BlackBerries. What sets apart this app from similar offerings in the App Store is the ordering functionality. With Pizza Hut for iPhone, you literally build your own virtual pizza, starting with crust and size. Then, select your toppings using the scroll wheel control, pinch to select size, and drag them onto the raw pizza base. Add too many toppings and the pizza explodes. Frankly, it reminds me a bit to how the Zombie Pizza game is played.
You can also order the WingStreet wings with a sauce. Another nice touch here: spread your sauce over the wings by shaking your device. There’s even a virtual waiter that will take your order for the four available Tuscani Pastas. And with a tap of the button, the nearest franchisee delivers the order to your location. All orders are processed by the QuikOrder service that earns 20 percent off every order made through the iPhone app. And while you’re waiting for the delivery, you can even kill time by playing a built-in mini Pizza Hut Racer game that challenges you to – deliver pizzas, of course.
